Japan Association for College and University Education>
  • Established in December 1979 as the “General Education Society,” the Japan Association for College and University Education is a academic association in the field of higher education. With the abolition of the subject category of “General Education” in the undergraduate education, as part of the revision of the Standards for Establishment of University in 1991, the name of the Society was changed to the Japan Association for College and University Education. This move, however, did never change the mission of the Society to advance the research in the field of university education, and also to support the wide range of the practices and research and development to improve teaching of the individual members and institutional members as well. The importance of university education is becoming ever more evident with the development of knowledge-based society, and therefore we aspire to contribute to university reform and revitalize higher education’s traditional role in personality formation.

Japanese Association of Higher Education Research>
  • Today, higher education, in which universities play a major role, has entered an age of structural change around the world. We have seen activities aimed at tackling practical and policy-related challenges as well as growing interest in interdisciplinary research. In Japan, a series of reforms and structural changes have led to a greater recognition of the necessity and importance of higher education research, and a movement toward the development of education and research systems has begun to gain momentum, as seen in the successive establishment of centers for university research and practice/management, as well as the establishment of training programs in graduate schools for researchers and specialists in areas relating to higher education. The field of higher education research extends to the social sciences, humanities, and even natural sciences given the nature of its subject, which is a very complex system and presents a diversity of issues. This has hindered the establishment of an independent academic society in the past. However, considering the importance of the issues concerning higher education and researches on this subject, which has become more obvious in this changing era, the establishment of an academic society is becoming an ever more critical issue for promoting cooperation and exchanges among researchers from different study fields, strengthening the theoretical and methodological basis of researches, seeking a further deepening and development of researches, dissemination of the outcomes of these researches and contributions to the solution of practical and policy-related challenges.

Comparative and International Education Society
  • The Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) is a scholarly association dedicated to increasing the understanding of educational issues, trends and policies through comparative, cross-cultural and international perspectives. Its nearly 2,500 individual members--researchers, analysts, practitioners and students--use different conceptual frameworks to explore topics related to education. These include a focus on schools, students, teachers and administrators, and on issues spanning early childhood and basic education to secondary and higher education, as well as non-formal education and life-long learning. Since its founding in 1956 as the first comparative education society in the world, the CIES has grown into a dynamic professional association. Nearly half its members are younger scholars and practitioners who are learning to apply theories and methods of the social sciences and history to address the world’s most intractable educational problems. The CIES also sponsors an outstanding peer-reviewed journal in the field, the Comparative Education Review(This transfer from a society homepage).

  • The world has recently seen bewildering changes, and the role of the universities must also change. Oita was once the center for Japan's inter-cultural exchange. Oita University hopes to continue and build on this tradition of initiative. The basic principles and goals for carrying out the university's mission are laid out here. Students are drawn from a variety of academic backgrounds. It is therefore essential to establish a system for their education which will effectively answer individual needs. It will help students to develop their moral sense, their creativity, and their practical abilities. At the same time, it is necessary for the university to encourage advanced research in many fields. Our basic concern will be to secure freedom of research while ensuring that the r esults of research are disclosed. The university should be organized so as to maintain a balance between fundamental and applied research, and should work towards a rebuilding of knowledge. It is also important to promote active contributions to, and interaction with, both local and international society through mutual communication. To carry out these tasks, the university needs to have an ongoing reform, based on a regular review and evaluation of its system and method of management. Oita University will begin a new chapter in its history with a renewed organization and system. We are dedicated to the further development of the university, and the creation of an environment filled with humanity.
